Wellbeing & Pastoral Care

We understand the challenges and pressures of being a young adult today. Our students' wellbeing is of the upmost importance, and we offer a range of practical resources and support throughout their time at Sixth Form. Our integrated pastoral system is the heart of a Lingfield education, ensuring every student feels valued and supported to be the best they can be.

Pastoral Team

Tutor System

The strong tutorial system in the Sixth Form closely supports students with their studies and their personal development. Every student is part of a tutor group with approximately nine students in each, meeting twice daily. The form tutor generally has the best oversight of students' lives at school and at home and is the first point of contact for parents on pastoral issues.

Form tutors are supported by a dedicated pastoral staff team:

  • Mrs Parsons, Deputy Head - Pastoral & Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Mrs Folkard, Head of Sixth Form & Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Mrs Walton, Sixth Form Welfare Officer & Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Ms Redfern, Pastoral Support Officer & Deputy Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)
  • Pip & Emma, School Counsellors
  • Mrs Noone, Art Therapist

Alongside school staff, we train Sixth Form mentors to support our younger students. Emotional Wellbeing Ambassadors are volunteers within each year group, liaising with our Sixth Form Wellbeing Prefects and feeding back to the counsellor and the pastoral team with any suggestions or concerns from the student body.

Leadership Roles

Our senior students are given a great deal of responsibility for their work and are expected to take advantage of the leadership opportunities available to them in the Sixth Form. As well as the Head Student Team, students can apply to become house or subject captains, Learning Mentors, lead the Moden UN team or work with Sixth Form staff in roles such as Charity, Careers or Anti-Bullying Captains.

All students are encouraged to be active in the School community and this can take the form of assisting with clubs, participating in productions, or being a member of an orchestra, choir or a sports team.

School Houses

Students belong to one of our four senior houses that run vertically throughout the senior school. The house system brings pupils together across the age groups and builds a sense of belonging and community. It forms the basis of many friendly and inclusive interhouse sports, competitions and events. The four senior houses are Clubb, Higgins, Yeates & Bell.

Counselling

Our School Counsellor is a qualified psychotherapist, overseeing our whole-school approach to supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing. She is on-site four days a week.

Counselling gives our young people a safe and confidential space to talk about the things that are troubling them, with a person that is professionally trained to offer support. Students can refer themselves to the service, or staff and parents can make a referral on their behalf, with their consent. The counsellor works closely with our two Welfare Support Officers; one for Years 7-11 and one for the Sixth Form. We also have trainee counsellors on placement who work with students, under supervision.

Healthy Minds & Healthy Bodies

Healthy minds and healthy bodies go hand in hand throughout the School. This mindset under-pins our planning for both the curriculum and co-curricular programmes.

In Years 12 and 13, our curriculum includes a double Games afternoon every week, alongside opportunities to take part in activities before and after school and access our on-site gym, alongside our robust Sports Scholars Programme and A Level PE or BTEC Sport syllabuses.

The Sixth Form Centre has its own coffee shop, the Atrium Cafe, and a dining hall offering a healthy menu of meals and snacks, with hot and cold options available.

Of course a healthy lifestyle isn’t just a regular exercise routine or a good diet, but a synergy of a mind and body. Our PSHE programme drives our whole-school approach to physical and mental health.

Learning Support

Learning support focuses on the provision of supplementary teaching to students who require additional help to realise their potential and reach their learning goals. This sits firmly in support of our commitment to individualised approaches to learning and promoting positive emotional wellbeing. We recognise that children learn at different rates and have individual needs; our aim is to empower all pupils to fulfil their goals.

We are pleased to offer:

  • A specialist learning support co-ordinator
  • Advanced Sixth Form Study Skills mini courses in Year 12
  • One-to-one or small group tuition and study assistance
  • Personalised arrangements for examinations
  • Disability support
  • Well-being advice and guidance
